Thought and Memory
seemed a logical name for a Crystal Skull website, after all thought and memory are two processes that take place within our own skulls.
Thought and Memory are abstract concepts, just as the crystal skulls can represent abstract ideas.
However, Thought and Memory has a deeper connection too...
A Corvidian Connection...
The Raven.
Corvus corax . "An omenous scavenger" to those people who only know him through Hollywood's movies. To many people, though, Raven is a spiritually powerful character who has been venerated as far back as written or oral history goes.
I have always been an admirer of the Corvid group of birds, the most intelligent group of birds on the planet. The Raven is the "king" of the Corvids, the largest and also the brightest.
In the Bible (I Kings), God commanded the ravens to feed Elijah when he was sent to the brook Cherith following his prophecies against Ahab.
To the Haida, Raven was the Trickster, responsible for miraculous deeds that included bringing sun to the world and man to life.
And to the Vikings, ravens provided both practical and spiritual support:
Odin kept himself informed about the affairs of the nine worlds with two faithful ravens. As Vikings at sea sent out ravens in search of land, Odin's own ravens Huginn and Muninn flew about and then whispered every scrap of news which they saw or heard tell of.
The birds' names mean Thought and Memory respectively.
In Grimnismal, Odin says: "For Huginn I fear lest he return not home, but I am more anxious for Muninn". This suggests that Odin valued memory more than thought, the passive act rather than the active, (but that is an altogether more complex discussion, for another time and place).
A little bit more about Corvus corax
Depending on who's research you read, the raven has between 18 and 64 distinct vocalizations.
They can learn to mimic human speech, a dog barking, a squeaky door on the outhouse, or practically any other sound!
Ravens, of which there are 103 subspecies worldwide, are one of the most successful of birds, and they can be found in virtually every part of the world -with the exception of Antarctica- from the Amazon to the Sahara and the Arctic. They have the largest brains in the bird kingdom, (yes, even larger than parrots!) with a brain-to-body ratio almost equal to dolphins and humans. The part of a bird's brain that is most responsible for intelligence, the hyperstriatum, is extremely well-developed as well.

Some thoughts about Skulls
The skull is a very powerful symbol - Also a very important one to us as a species, since we all have one. Without a skull, none of us would be capable of sustaining life as we currently know it.
In many cultures around the world, the skull is revered as the House of the Soul. This is the place where our main senses are housed - so therefore must surely be where the soul resides as well.
To many North Americans, the skull is seen as being symbolic of evil and death. First of all, let us clarify that evil and death are not necessarily the same thing. Death is a fact of life, it is not something malicious and conniving. It is the ultimate -and inevitable- end to our physical existences, nothing more. I believe the "death = evil" association is mostly due to Hollywood's influence.
To look upon a skull is akin to looking upon death itself... to be given the opportunity to go within and ponder death from an objective point of view.
Wouldn't it stand to reason that if we could understand and accept death as a process in this experience we call life-on-earth, our fears would likely diminish?
It is another common belief that you attract what you fear... so without fear, it would seem right that living would be a somewhat of an easier process...
This life-on-earth is an experience of cycles..., birth, life, death, rebirth. To be occasionally reminded of death, (as morbid as I know that may sound) may not necessarily be a bad thing. For to look upon a symbol of death is to remind ourselves that we *are* alive, and we should live life to it's fullest potential every moment possible...
Metaphysically, a skull is a mirror to our subconscious self. It is said that those who fear the symbol of the skull may actually have inner fears of some aspects of their own beings. Some say that the skull is representative of death, and it is a fear of death that makes them hold a fear of the skull.
This may be an issue that could benefit from serious consideration... what is it about death that should be feared? The letting go of the familiar is the only thing that I can come up with when I ponder this notion.
Death is said to be merely a door to another world, one that is far more brilliant and incredible than our own.
From another perspective, a stone that is fashioned into the skull shape suddenly takes on a multi-dimensional persona. A rough stone takes on the features of something that is very very dear to us... our own skull! Doesn't it stand to reason that this makes aligning ourselves with the stone's own particular energies an easier task?
The subconscious recognizes the skull symbol for what it really is ... a reflection of our own existence!
